Safeguarding & Protecting Children - UK Coaching

Every child deserves to enjoy their sport. This workshop will raise your awareness of the tell-tale signs of abuse, and give you the tools and confidence you need to deal with any issues sensitively, appropriately and effectively should the need ever arise.

This workshop is a 'Minimum Standards for Active Coaches' requirement for many governing bodies of sport*. The 'Minimum Standards for Active Coaches' are seen as the basic standards every coach needs to meet to carry out their role safely and effectively. It can also be attended by all those responsible for organising children's sport (eg within governing bodies of sport, local authorities, sports and leisure centres, and sports clubs) and those who lead or deliver children's sport programmes (eg coaches, leaders, instructors, development officials, administrators, volunteers and parents).

This course will help you to:
- identify and recognise good coaching practice and the implications for your coaching
- explore your values and feelings in relation to child abuse, and recognise their potential impact on your response
- recognise and respond to possible signs of child abuse
- take appropriate action if concerns about a child arise.

During this workshop we will consider:

- The effectiveness of our own coaching practice
- Practical ways to effectively engage those we coach

This workshop will be delivered by highly regarded coaching expert Dr Kevin Morgan (BA (Hons), PGCE, MPHIL, PHD). Kevin is a principal lecturer in sport pedagogy and sport coaching at Cardiff Metropolitan University. He is Programme Director for the taught doctorate in sport coaching and in 2014, Kevin achieved Senior Fellowship of the HEA in recognition of his expertise in pedagogical practice, research and leadership.

More than two in five do not feel welcome and included in sports lessons.
Aims of the Programme
Empower sports coaches to be active change agents, creating more inclusive environments in their teams
Give coaches the knowledge, tools and confidence to tackle homophobic, biphobic and transphobic language and bullying, and create a sports team where LGBT young people can take part and be fully themselves.
The programme has been funded by the Welsh Government, and is kindly hosted by Cardiff Metropolitan University.

Who and what is this programme for?
This programme is for any person who takes a leadership role within a sports team or club. We are particularly looking for those who work with young people.
